While I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its honest and at times all-as well-real depiction of the emotional trauma heroine Violette has gone through, it is much darker than the average shoujo calorie-free novel. Yep, there's a reverse harem aspect, and yep, it's the type of isekai known equally yarinaoshi loop (AKA going back in time to fix a mistake), but it besides comes with content warnings for emotional (and unsaid sexual) abuse. Violette'southward life is a misery thanks to her truly atrocious parents (the author says she hates Violette's dad), and if it wasn't for Yulan and Marin, the poor daughter would be in fifty-fifty worse shape.
So, long story short: this is a good book. But don't go into it expecting fluffy opposite harem rom-com action.

Only look a little more closely, and merely one of them is grin.
Our principal character, Violette, is the somber daughter in the center of the limerick. The story starts when Violette is of a sudden time-jumped from being imprisoned for a terrible, unspecified crime, to the time when she merely meets Maryjune, her half-sis who was the victim of the crime. Given a new charter on life, and the possibility of living gratis, Violette decides she volition cutting herself off from others and alive a solitary life until she is of age to join a religious order.
Needless to say, this doesn't work out every bit planned. She'south a loftier schoolhouse pupil, for one thing, and she'southward had connections with a number of people upward until she was her electric current age. These include a long-term friendship with a cute underclassman, Yulan, and an unresolved crush on Claudia, a prince and likewise the school president. There'due south besides her family: her father, stepmother, and Maryjune herself, a sweet young girl who is new to life as a nobleman'south daughter, and whose naïve blunders and commoner'southward groundwork are getting her some "attending" from the daughter-bullies of the school.
To be honest, equally little as her father cares virtually her, Violette'due south family life is meliorate than it was with her deceased female parent. Her past family life is a major source of what I consider a thread of psychological horror that shows up now and and then. An boosted element is Yulan himself, who, when we run across things from his point of view, is obsessed with Violette to the point of vowing he volition destroy anyone who harms her. He even acts belligerently toward Claudia when Claudia but talks with Violette.
It was interesting reading a calorie-free novel where the story isn't total of action, or fifty-fifty events, to speak of. Scenes largely consist of fairly ordinary schoolhouse days things--well, some of them are more ordinary for a posh schoolhouse--like intimate teas, or Violette sitting on a bench in a garden on campus thinking about things, or coming together a friend later school for a shopping date. The characters' emotions are in the forefront and are the major source of suspense. At times the emotions are over-elaborated, in my opinion, or sometimes Violette'due south conclusions don't quite make sense, just the reader'southward anxiety over her making missteps leading to a reprise of her "bad ending" is a major office of what makes the book tick.
The setting is somewhat indefinite, but it adds to the otherworldly upshot that I sometimes go from anime set in elite schools: Maria-sama ga Miteru, Hana Yori Dango, Dear Brother, etc. There's no indication as to where in Nippon, or the world, nosotros might exist. There are automobiles--which came every bit a minor surprise about a third of the way through the book--just no hint that these kids have jail cell phones (or that in that location are phones at all?). This could be taking place anytime between 1960 and today, as far as I can tell.
This is quite a unique lite novel, in my admittedly express experience, both in subject affair and mood. I will definitely be picking up the next i to see where things go next. Three and a half stars, rounded up because information technology's squeamish to see something like this in a sea of boy-centric isekai. This is the first calorie-free novel I've given more than two or three stars to. Congrats, I Swear I Won't Bother Yous Once more!

Content warning for this book: emotional corruption, (view spoiler)[possibly sexual also (hide spoiler)], and a potential love interest who displays manipulative and decision-making qualities.Violette is in prison for a crime she has, out of jealousy, committed against her half-sister Maryjune. She has come a long fashion and now deeply regrets her actions. She wishes she could go back in time and live a quiet life, bothering no one, just she knows that's impossible. Except suddenly that's exactly what happens - from one moment to the next, time rewinds itself and she finds herself over again being introduced to her begetter's new wife (his former mistress) and his half-daughter (who was conceived while Violette's mother was still alive).
This fourth dimension, Violette is determined to brand it through the next ii years without causing harm. After she graduates, she wants to join a convent and spend the residue of her life quietly atoning for the sins she committed in her other timeline. Her feelings of guilt are as well great for her to contemplate whatever other future. However, information technology won't be easy to accomplish her goal. While she no longer blames Maryjune for anything or wants to harm her, she tin't will away the pain that Maryjune'southward presence causes her, and she can't change the kind of person she is. All the same, she tries hard to do better this time around, and her efforts don't get unnoticed. If she's lucky, maybe it will be enough.
I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this. The championship and cover make it expect and sound like at least one-half a dozen other "villainess trying to brand things right/avoid a bad end" romances out there, and patently the author originally intended it to be a rom-com. I figured this would basically be Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter without the isekai "reborn in my favorite otome game" element.
What I got instead was an introspective graphic symbol-focused drama that was more than concerned with the characters' various emotional wounds and insecurities than with romance (although I absolutely expect hereafter volumes to focus on romance more, and I'm very nervous most the direction the series might take).
I causeless Prince Claudia would the cold and arrogant type who'd gradually warm up to Violette. Instead, he was surprisingly awkward and lacking in self-confidence. Yulan appeared to exist the beautiful younger brother type, the one who e'er knew how to get Violette to relax. Yet, (view spoiler)[this turned out to be an act - the real Yulan was kind of horrifying, and reminded me strongly of Toma in the otome-game based anime Amnesia. (For those who oasis't played the game or watched the series: Toma is a reassuring childhood friend-type beloved interest whose obsession with the heroine reaches the signal where he literally drugs and cages her. Yulan actually thinks to himself that he'd like to lock Violette up so that he tin can keep her to himself, so my fears are not unjustified.) (hide spoiler)] And Violette...wow.
Her parents were monstrous. I don't intendance how Violette'south mother behaved towards Auld, her male parent, information technology didn't alibi the way he neglected her and then treated her like one of Maryjune'due south accessories. And Violette'due south mother was a sick and twisted adult female. When Auld abased her in favor of his mistress, she raised Violette equally a boy (view spoiler)[in order to have a mini-Auld past her side - in that location were indications that her behavior towards Violette was possibly sexually as well equally emotionally abusive (on-page: the way she caressed Violette and made her answer to the name Auld deeply disturbed a grapheme who witnessed it). When Violette hit puberty, her mother bandage her off in disgust and then basically willed herself to die in a last-ditch try to get Auld to care about her. (hide spoiler)]
The writing didn't initially appeal to me, except for the fact that information technology was third person POV. Lots of descriptions of the characters' feelings with very little activeness. But and then the characters started interacting more than, and information technology became clear that several of them were extremely screwed up. I establish myself unable to look away - part of it was a kind of literary rubbernecking, and function of information technology was that I actually started to go emotionally invested in the characters. Here'due south hoping the author has other plans for Yulan than to make him Violette's height love involvement, considering she deserves ameliorate. And I actually want to know what'southward going on between Yulan and Claudia (half brothers, maybe?), whether Claudia will manage to grow as a person the mode he seems to desire to, and whether the painfully naive Maryjune will ever realize the harm she unintentionally inflicts upon Violette.
I'm still not entirely sure this was an enjoyable read, but it was definitely an interesting one. Then far there hasn't been much of a plot - I'thousand hoping that Soratani isn't the sort of writer who writes interesting characters but then has no idea what to exercise with them. At any rate, I definitely program to go on reading this serial, simply I'k very nervous virtually where it might become. It could either be amazing, or a completely horrifying encephalon bleach-requiring disaster.
Extras:
Black and white illustrations throughout, and a brusque afterword past the author. She hates Violette's father (yay!) simply seems to like Yulan (ehhh). Hopefully she likes his want to support Violette but recognizes that he'd be an extremely unhealthy beloved interest for her. Crossing my fingers.

Characters
I beloved the characters, hither'south why: they're all secretly messed upward! Except for the begetter, he's but very clearly an asshole but also in an interesting mode. They all have a articulate personality and backstory and some characters notwithstanding take a bit of mystery to them. I love this volume for their personalities and goals and how messed up they are, because it makes their dynamics and relationships conflict interestingly. And here's the absurd function: my favourite grapheme is the Primary character (gasp). She's seriously messed up, really flawed, simply all the same likeable by doing her best and showing actual intelligence here and there. Her thinking pattern is just screwed from trauma and a terrible upbringing, but information technology felt like it fit and I could actually meet how she'd have snapped and went to practice horrible things in the past. This does mean she's not a very cheerful character and she does recollect a lot, so keep that in mind if such things irritate you.
We've withal got a lot to acquire about the characters so a few of them are underdeveloped compared to the balance, merely it feels like that is planned and volition exist rectified later.
The plot
This is a daily life story and a huge redemption character arc, just there's no plot, then yous've been warned! Call up of this more than as piece of life, only the version about messed up aristocrats going to a fancy school. You will see Violette navigating daily aristocrat life, which could be boring for some people.
At the same time, the overarching 'plot' is basically the protagonist's redemption arc and information technology's written squeamish and tedious. I'd like to actually come across flashbacks of the evil things she did, since nosotros only got the bare minimum information from her thoughts now, just the whole book is nearly her walking on eggshells to non get thrown in jail once again; trying not to bother anyone equally the championship suggests. It's a redemption arc which is only known to the protagonist because she magically finds herself back in fourth dimension to redo office of her life, so the question actually is if and when she'll forgive herself. What makes it work so well for me is that she'south not looking for forgiveness from others and people who have known her to be bad in the by practise treat her with caution. And while she'due south trying to avoid lashing out again, this isn't easy for her because she still struggles with the bitter feelings towards her situation and stepsister that acquired her original downfall.
The writing
This is a light novel, so the linguistic communication is very simplistic. Personally I don't mind it and savor the quick pace it brings along! If y'all like complex prose then this is probably not for you lot.
Setting
I love the parts where they exercise some aristocratic worldbuilding through character conflict, showing what is accepted and what can atomic number 82 to problems, interesting viewpoints.

This felt like the introduction to something larger. I call up information technology does need to introduce more than plot progression in volume 2 or I might go bored as well or information technology might get too repetitive. Only for the offset book in this series, I was satisfied with this!

The FL has a terribly sad backstory, but information technology does non stop there. I don't think the FL has ever had a time in her life where she was truly happy and carefree. It hurts reading information technology considering you lot only want her to break free from her family unit and be equally happy equally she possibly tin be.
The honey interests are... troublesome. Yulan is obsessive and mildly terrifying, but he truly cares for her. But knowing her backstory, information technology becomes difficult to ship her with someone who is obsessive. And so in that location is the prince, who pisses off the reader immediately after he appears. He is much more incompetent than I expected him to exist.
It was a very good book that was written well, simply it might be a tough read mentally.

I won't lie. I picked this up on a whim. The premise sounded interesting enough to hold my attention, at least for long enough to finish the book. Romance/ rom-com (mixed with time travel, which is an interesting add on) is not usual become to genre, simply I figured I'd requite information technology a hazard. I'chiliad quite pleased to not be disappointed. I volition do my best to not make this spoiler free…The first matter that should be said is this book does deal with some pretty heavy subjects (child abuse and neglect specifically), and hints at potentially worse. Zero graphic, but it doesn't hide it either. If that is triggering, I'd be weary. For those that can read things with those subjects, I absolutely recommend!
The characters are delightfully varied in their personalities. None of them seem like they're going to exist as well flat going frontwards.
Violette, the main graphic symbol is super introspective, and very much aware of herself. She'due south well enlightened of her flaws, even if she isn't certain how to handle them. She likewise is doing the all-time she can, while not trying to draw attention to herself. This is probably my favorite thing, and so far, most this book.
Violette'due south maid is amazing! x/10. Get yourself a friend and confidant like this woman. That'due south not to say she isn't flawed (all the characters are subsequently all). She is genuinely looking out for the MC though. Her backstory is touched on briefly, and it explains her devotion.
Violette'due south childhood friend is an amazingly well done graphic symbol. Super sweet and caring to the MC, merely he can be kind of possessive over her to. Again, information technology's non exactly bad, but hoo-boy, it could be (I promise non, because I genuinely like him).
Violette's younger sister is, in my opinion, cloyingly sweet, and naively oblivious. Information technology'due south peachy, just information technology's non great for the MC either. She's learning.
The prince is… awkwardly incompetent. Especially where it counts (which is kind of hilarious to me).
The Duke is… something. I remember he's the only character I genuinely dislike (and the MC'south mother, but she's not in the story long, and it'due south only flash backs). He is not a desperately written character, only his grapheme is just unpleasant.
Even the side characters that aren't often seen are pretty well fleshed out (with the exception of the MC'due south footstep mother, who really isn't introduced at all, other than being the Duke'due south second wife). Information technology's fantastic, and not something I'thou used to for background characters (we need more of this! Background characters can help motion the story forth to!)
It has been a while since I found a book that I struggled to actually put down. It was a pleasant surprise to find information technology in an unlikely source. I'1000 eagerly pending for the second ane to come out now.
Side note, and then I'm done. Don't skip out on the afterword from the author. Information technology's pretty entertaining to read the thoughts from Soratani.

I picked this up purely based off the comprehend and the blurb on the back, thinking it was exactly up my aisle. I love anything villainess/otome isekai flavored, and naturally I was fully expecting to dear this book. I'm genuinely surprised by the positive reception it has because I establish the prose barely palatable and extremely repetitive. Having to sit down through Violette go along and on well-nigh the same things in mindlessly circadian monologues made this such a slog to get through. Her life is tragic, sure, but none of the "dark" or "depressing" stuff in this book had any emotional weight. You know that phrase "Information technology'south like watching a automobile crash"? This was more than similar watching a fender bough. The constant back and forth between characters wasn't entertaining plenty to be called melodramatic, and their personalities are so trite as to be completely forgettable. That'd be all well and good if this was a comedy, but trying to grapple intense subject thing through such blank slates is ineffectual. If you desire to explore trauma through a literary lens, you'd improve have well-written characters to dorsum it upwards. Perhaps they're less i-note to someone who hasn't played a single otome game, only Yulan is merely such a distilled and tiresome yandere trope without even having the decency to be entertaining in his obsession. Mila might as well not be, Gia is a typical greenhorn trope, and our MC is a poor waif of a girl who spends the entire book woe-is-me-ing herself in and out of unpleasant situations. Unpleasant for her to experience and unpleasant for me to read about. I really felt no connectedness with her. I remember Claudia was the simply character I kind of sort of liked (?), but he had much less page-time than anyone else.
The dialogue in this was peculiarly boring, constantly switching between a grapheme espousing paragraphs of their ethics, to juvenile dorsum and forth mundanities that conveyed no information.
"Hee hee," Yulan snickered.
"Hm? What was that virtually?" Violette asked.
"It's a seeecret."
"Y'know, Yulan, you're a pretty weird guy."
^How did dialogue like this laissez passer the editing phase.
I'll requite this volume one thing— in that location are some interesting ruminations on morality and I won't mistake it for trying to convey a darker story. But just because something deals with dark field of study matter doesn't make it well written. Anything worthwhile is buried under the extraneous prose.

Its not all roses though - we do have some distressing parts especially in relation to Violet and her family, only these parts are few and far between, encompassed past the cute clumsiness of a second chance life and blooming teenage romance.
So like I said...cute🤷🏾♀️
Started off with her in prison apologizing and beingness sorry. Never telling who she injure what impairment (impale or hurt) she caused to end up in prison house. And so far the story is interesting, the but problem is the adjacent book takes to long to come out sometimes. I hope that things go a little better for her in the next book and that she starts to like her sister better.
I enjoyed the story and can't wait to see how the characters grow and continue to change. Especially can't await to come across if Vio keeps her promise to never bother anyone again.
