"Hasta la vista, baby" is a catchphrase associated with Arnold Schwarzenegger's title character from the 1991 science fiction activity pic Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Origin and apply [edit]
The term "Hasta la vista", literally "Until the view", is a Castilian farewell that can generally be understood as meaning "Until the (next) time we run across each other" or "Encounter yous later" or "Goodbye". In 1970, Bob Hope comically delivered the "Hasta la vista, babe" saying to Raquel Welch in the starting time of their "Rocky Racoon" tribute on Raquel Welch's special Raquel. This term, with the added word "infant"—"Hasta la vista, baby"—was earlier used in a pop hit song from 1987, "Looking for a New Love" past Grammy Honor winner Jody Watley.[1] It was as well used in the 1988 Tone Lōc single "Wild Matter".
The Terminator franchise [edit]
Terminator 2: Judgment Day [edit]
"Hasta la vista, babe" became a famous catchphrase when it was used in the 1991 pic Terminator 2: Judgment Mean solar day, which was written by James Cameron and William Wisher Jr. The phrase is featured in an exchange between the moving-picture show's characters John Connor (Edward Furlong) and The Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), where the former teaches the latter the use of slang:
John Connor: No, no, no, no. You gotta listen to the mode people talk. You don't say "affirmative" or some shit like that. Y'all say "no problemo". And if someone comes upwardly to you with an attitude, you say "eat me". And if you want to shine them on, information technology's "hasta la vista, infant".
T-800: Hasta la vista, baby.
The Terminator says the phrase again prior to shattering the liquid nitrogen–frozen T-yard with a gunshot, famously interpreting the vocative comma with a protracted pause before the word "baby".
In the European Castilian version of the pic, the phrase was dubbed as "Sayonara, baby" to preserve its humorous nature amid Spanish-speaking audiences.[2] However, in the Hispanic American version of the film, the phrase remains untouched.
Terminator three: Rise of the Machines [edit]
The phrase is once again uttered in the 2003 film Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines by John Connor (Nick Stahl) while talking to the T-850 (Schwarzenegger), thinking it to exist the aforementioned Terminator he met as a child. The machine replies that it is a different T-101:
John Connor: Do you fifty-fifty remember me? Sarah Connor? Blowing up Cyberdyne? "Hasta la vista, baby"? Ring any bells?
T-850: That was a different T-101.
John Connor: What, do you guys come off an assembly line or something?
T-850: Exactly.
John Connor: Oh man, I'm gonna take to teach yous everything all over again.
Politics [edit]
Schwarzenegger has since used the phrase during public speeches as part of his political career. During the 1992 Republican primaries, Pat Buchanan challenged President George H. W. Bush for the nomination. Schwarzenegger joined Bush in New Hampshire and urged voters to transport Pat Buchanan a message: "Hasta la vista, baby."[iii]
On Oct 7, 2003, Schwarzenegger was elected Governor of California in a retrieve election. The Michigan Daily titled its article "Voters bid 'hasta la vista' to Davis".[iv]
On November 17, 2008, Schwarzenegger said in an interview on CNN: "At that place are so many different challenges California has — it's the greatest state in the greatest land in the globe. Hasta la vista, infant!"[5]
In 2008, Schwarzenegger met with Chilean president Michelle Bachelet during her state visit to California. Bachelet closed her public oral communication with the phrase "Hasta la vista" and imitated Schwarzenegger's accent.[six]
Other usage [edit]
The phrase was as well the title of the Skin album Hasta la Vista, Baby! and part of the title of U2's 1997 alive album Hasta la Vista Infant! U2 Live in Mexico City.
